AGAINST THE GRAIN

Your go-to guide for growing food at home.
From seed to harvest, we help you alchemize any space into a fruitful abundance.

Who We Are

We’re a crew of UBC students passionate about empowering our community to feel like agents within the food system. We all have had diverse experiences working and volunteering in both local and global farming spaces, and from that harvested tips + tricks to share with others. We’ve gathered our personal experiences of trials and errors growing in our small spaces, to resources from local organizations, and crop specific research, and brought it all here to one space. Our intention is simple; to make gardening literacy more accessible to our local Vancouver community.

Meet the Crew

Asalah

Asalah is a 5th year Interdisciplinary major exploring Regenerative Community Systems and Ecological Storytelling. When not exploring the intersection between human + environmental wellbeing she is out in the fields working on small-scale farms or out in the backcountry camping!

Azélie

Azélie is a fourth year UBC undergraduate student majoring in Human Geography. She has experience working at a non-profit educational farm in Linfen, China. If she is not studying, you can find her in the kitchen baking some delicious bread or lovely cookies. If you find yourself in need of a mouthwatering vegan dish, she is your girl!

Thomas

Thomas is a graduate of the UBC Applied Biology program, with a degree in Sustainable Agriculture and Environment. He has worked with community gardens on food security and food education initiatives in the city of Vancouver. When he is not gardening, you can find him woodworking, or cooking.

Maryem

Maryem is in her final year at UBC, pursuing an undergraduate degree in Environment and Sustainability. She is most passionate about food sovereignty and hopes to be part of meaningful change surrounding food systems. She loves all things sports-related and making some highly-rated tiramisu. If you run into her, she will most likely try to convince you to visit Morocco and bribe you with all the delicious fruits her home country has to offer.
